Apprenticeships Explained
What are Apprenticeships about?
As an Apprentice, you will learn while working to build your knowledge and skills, gaining qualifi cations
and earning money at the same time. There are different levels of Apprenticeship available, but they
all lead to NVQs, Key Skills qualifi cations and, in most cases, a Technical Certifi cate from an awarding
body. You will have a separate certifi cate for each of these as you achieve them, as well as receiving a
certifi cate once you have completed and achieved all aspects of your Apprenticeship course.
Am I eligible for an Apprenticeship?
You need to be living in England, aged 16-24, and not taking part in full-time education. You will also
need to be working with an employer, in most cases for at least 30 hours per week. You do not have to
pay for an Apprenticeship if you are under 19. It is important to keep in mind that you may need to buy
materials, clothing and books for some courses.
Standard Entry Requirements
You need a good standard of education, generally grade Cs in English, Maths and a subject related to
your chosen vocational area, and an interest in the area of work. There will be an initial assessment
process which will identify your suitability for your choice of apprenticeship. For more information,
please contact the Customer Liaison and Enrolment Team on 01935 423921.
What are my Progression Routes?
If you are completing the Apprenticeship course (Level 2), and your employer is willing to continue
your training at a higher level, then you will have an opportunity to progress on to the Advanced
Apprenticeship (Level 3).
When you fi nish the Advanced Apprenticeship the employer will, hopefully, recognise your potential
and worth and offer you a permanent position within their organisation. At this stage you may have the
opportunity to progress to university to study a Foundation degree, or onto an NVQ Level 4 in the same
occupational area. Alternatively, you may wish to complement your qualifi cations with a further NVQ
at Level 3 in a different, related subject. If you choose a subject area which is very different from the
achieved Apprenticeship, and you are still within the 16-24 age group, then it may be possible to gain
further funding to support you with your studies.
