BTEC First Diploma (Level 2) TRAVEL & TOURISM
Through this course you will learn about the operations of the Travel & Tourism industry and working
within it. You will have the opportunity to research tourist destinations in the UK and Europe,
discovering how holiday destinations are marketed and about customer service. Emphasis will be
placed on developing your work-related skills and, although a lot of the work is classroom-based,
you will be encouraged to develop abilities through practical work wherever possible. Assessment is
through coursework.
Specific Entry Requirements: You should have achieved two GCSEs at Grade A* - C, one preferably
in English Language, and others at Grade D or above.
Additional Expenses: Approximately £50 for trips.
Residentials: There may be an optional residential open to First Diploma students during the Easter
term.
Work Experience: Two weeks in the Travel and Tourism industry during the course.
Progression: Employment within the industry, or, dependent on your grades, you can progress to the
BTEC National Diploma/Certifi cate in Travel & Tourism.
BTEC National Certifi cate/Diploma (Level 3) TRAVEL & TOURISM
This course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of work
within the Travel & Tourism industry. Topics include a range of
business units and subjects such as: Tour Operations; Air Travel;
Business Travel; Customer Service; Organising Events and
Conferences; the Work of Holiday Representatives; the
Cruise Industry.
Although the course is largely classroom-based, there
will also be a great emphasis on developing your
work-related skills through practical activities.
Specific Entry Requirements: At least six GCS-
Es at Grade A* - C (including English at Grade C)
and a commitment to your studies.
Additional Expenses: Trips approximately £120
over the two years. Residential £400-£1000.
Residentials: A short-haul residential may be
arranged within the two years and a more costly
long-haul destination. All students are required to
attend one.
Work Experience: A two-week work placement within
the travel & tourism industry
Progression: There are a number of further travel &
tourism qualifi cations that could be studied at university, such
as Tourism and Events Management. Alternatively, you could
progress directly into employment. The course provides
many opportunities for students to link with potential employers.
