Your Care & Support
There is a large team of highly trained, specialist staff at the College to support you in your studies.
Department Managers
These manage a team of tutors and act rather like a Head of Year in schools. Your Department
Manager may interview you when you fi rst apply to College and will oversee your progress through
College.
The Personal Tutor
You will have a Personal Tutor at College, often one of the lecturers who teaches you. You will meet
your tutor at least once a week with your tutor group and have regular one-to-one meetings at least
once every half-term. Your tutor will help you to settle into the College, keep a close eye on your
progress and attendance and be the fi rst person to turn to should any problem arise affecting your
College work.
Counselling Service
Counselling can help anxiety, exam stress, depression, low self-esteem, family and relationship
diffi culties, phobias, substance misuse, bullying, anger management and any other emotional issues
that may cause a lack of motivation or inability to cope with your course. Confidentiality is respected at
all times.
Life Skills Mentor
The Life Skills Mentor offers individual support for students who fi nd aspects of College life challenging.
Mental Health Co-ordinators
Mental health diffi culties are quite common. They can affect anyone and their ability to cope. This
confi dential service is available to all students.
Learner Finance and Welfare Co-ordinator
The Learner Finance and Welfare Co-ordinator can help with all your transport and fi nance enquiries.
Getting to and from College easily is important if you are to get the most from your course. Financial
help may be available for costs associated with your course.
The Learning Link
All students have different learning needs. Learning Link staff (specialist tutors and learning support
practitioners) are there to offer students who have specifi c learning diffi culties and/or disabilities such
as Dyslexia, ADHD, Aspergers or physical diffi culties, with a wide range of academic support. They aim
to help everyone reach their full potential on their chosen course. Our highly-skilled staff will be able to
discuss and agree with you the appropriate support that meets your individual needs. It is important to
contact us if you feel you need support.
Nursing Advisor for Students
The College's nurse works with and for students on all aspects of health, providing a service which was
awarded Gold Status under the Respect Initiative by Somerset Primary Care Trust.
Personal Advisor for Apprentices
This advisor provides a confi dential service to all College apprentices, offering individual or group
support at college or at work. Support can be provided for a range of social needs such as housing,
fi nance, dependency and advocacy.
The Connexions Personal Advisor
The College has a Connexions Personal Advisor, who will be able to help you if you run into diffi culties
that seriously affect your college work. The Advisor offers impartial advice and guidance.
Student Union Liaison Role
The Student Union Liaison Offi cer works with the College and the Students' Union to ensure that all
students have an opportunity for personal development.
