NVQ (SEMTA) Foundation (Level 2) ENGINEERING
This course provides a thorough introduction to engineering, giving you the basic skills required by
local companies. The course integrates City & Guilds or EDEXCEL qualifi cations with the Sector
Skills Council (SEMTA) Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) NVQ2 Foundation Certifi cate. You
will have an intensive year studying areas selected from turning, milling, fitting, assembly work and
marking-out and fabrication. You will also have the opportunity to move into more theoretical areas
such as health and safety, drawing, engineering processes, manufacturing, science and maths.
Specific Entry Requirements: There are no formal entry requirements, as selection will be by College
assessments and interview. As a guide we would expect you to have a minimum of four GCSEs at
Grade C to include Maths, Science, English and a technical-based subject.
Additional Expenses: Approximately £25 for drawing and writing equipment.
Progression: Upon successful completion of the course, your opportunities for employment are
high. To maximise your career prospects, due consideration will be given to the requirements of local
industries.
BTEC National Diploma (Level 3) ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY
This course is designed to equip you with the skills and
knowledge required for a successful career in engineering.
You will study a range of core and optional units which
may include: Micro-electronics; Electronic Circuit
Manufacture; Engineering Science; Engineering
Drawing; CAD; Maths; Mechanical Principles;
Manufacturing Systems. Through these
you will develop the skills, knowledge and
competences needed to carry out the
duties of an engineer in the workplace.
Specific Entry Requirements: You
will need at least four GCSEs at
Grades A*-C (including Maths) or a
National Qualifi cation Framework
(NQF) qualifi cation at Level 2.
Additional Expenses: Approximately
£25.
Progression: If you decide to go
directly into employment, BNDs are well
recognised and respected by employers.
They are equally well recognised by
universities and many students progress
to degree courses. Students in full-time
employment will often have the opportunity to
continue their studies on a part-time basis on a
Foundation degree programme, such as the one at
the UCY.
