AS/A Level PSYCHOLOGY

Psychology is the scientifi c study of behaviour and experience. In other words, it is concerned with
what people do and how people think and feel. It is usually defined as "the science of behaviour and
mental processes". This course covers theories and research relating to various aspects of behaviour
including cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, physiological psychology, individual
differences, social psychology, comparative psychology, bio-psychology, atypical development,
abnormal behaviour and more.

Specific Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply. GCSEs in English
(Grade A* - B), Maths or Statistics (Grade A* - C). You need not have studied Psychology before.

Additional Expenses: Fees for optional trips approximately £350

Residential: Potential trips include a revision conference, a day trip to Marwell Zoo and a residential
visit to Nottingham University.

Progression: This qualifi cation is suitable for entry to many university-level qualifi cations, such
as those available at the UCY. It is also a rapidly-growing fi eld, as knowledge of Psychology is
considered useful for any area of employment which involves working with people, e.g. personnel work,
management, education, health, public relations, advertising, marketing or counselling.

AS/A Level RELIGIOUS STUDIES

This course deals with a fascinating range of topics relating to the Philosophy of Religion and moral and
ethical issues which are widely debated today. It looks at key religious issues such as the existence of
God, evil and suffering, faith and miracles and ethical debates concerning war, personal relationships
and ethical dilemmas. The course is taught through lectures and guided independent study, as well as
group work, role play and analysis of audio-visual material. It will give you access to knowledge and
skills which will enable you to gain a greater understanding of contemporary events and issues.

Specific Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply. This is a demanding
academic course requiring students to deal with some complex philosophical and ethical ideas and
argue a case in a cogent manner in good English. Students with GCSE Religious Studies should have
Grade A* - C. Those without should have English Language GCSE at Grade A* - C.

Additional Expenses: £20 for educational visits/trips.

Trips: Possible trips to local religious sites.

Progression: This course gives access to a range of degrees, but is particularly relevant to Theology
or Philosophy. Completing this course demonstrates to employers that you are able to think clearly and
logically, as well as meet deadlines, be creative and work effectively in a team. Career options include
the caring professions, social work and teaching.
