AS/A Level MATHEMATICS
This course starts by extending the algebra and graphs, trigonometry,
probability and statistics met at GCSE level. The most important,
completely new, topic is calculus, the mathematics of change. In addition
there are two application modules: Statistics and Mechanics.
Specific Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements for A Levels
apply. You should have achieved GCSE Mathematics at Grade A* - B.
Additional Expenses: There is a £10 fee which covers the cost of resources, a formula book and a
revision pack for each module. You will need a scientifi c calculator.
Progression: Mathematics is a highly-thought-of qualifi cation in general and is a 'must have' A Level
for university-level courses in physical sciences, computer sciences, engineering and maths. It is also
a very transferable skill for employment.
AS/A Level MUSIC
This course allows you to develop your musical ideas and expand your knowledge and understanding
of all aspects of music and performance. You will become involved in many different areas, including
performing as part of an ensemble, learning the craft of composing and developing your listening and
analysis ability. You will also be entered for the Associated Board of Music theory exams. You can also
become involved in extra-curricular music activities including the college production.
Specific Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply. Performance at Grade
5 or above and theoretical working knowledge at Grade 3 or above. GCSE Music is an advantage.
Exceptions can be made if you can demonstrate good musical knowledge.
Additional Expenses: You will need to provide your own instruments and headphones. Trips paid for
on a trip-by-trip basis, costing approximately £50.
Residential: A number of mandatory educationally-relevant trips will be organised.
Progression: The course suits students with musical and performing skills and interests who wish to
go on to university-level courses or develop a career in music.
AS/A Level PHILOSOPHY
This course will enable you to gain a thorough grounding in key philosophical ideas, themes and
techniques. If we believe something, does that make it true? What makes actions right or wrong? Is
there a meaning to life? Is there a God? These are just some of the questions which will be examined
on this course. This course is particularly suitable for students who enjoy grappling with challenging and
stimulating intellectual ideas.
Specific Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply.
Trips: Possibility of a revision course organised by ALP.
Progression: Philosophy provides a good grounding in clear and analytical thinking which is suitable
for any university level course of study, including those available at the UCY, and many career
opportunities.
