AS/A Level GERMAN
This course will enable you to understand German spoken at normal speed by native speakers, read
newspapers and magazines in German, express your own ideas fairly fluently in German in both
speech and writing and understand something of the civilisation and culture of Germany. We will try to
ensure you have the opportunity to develop as a fl uent and confi dent user of your new language and
provide you with opportunities to travel abroad, meet the people and learn something of their culture.
Specific Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply. You should have
achieved a Grade A* - B in German GCSE.
Additional Expenses: Approximately £370 for an optional trip.
Residential: Previous trips have included a trip to Berlin with the History department.
Progression: An A Level in a modern language is highly valued in today's competitive international job
market. Many students progress on to a university-level course, such as those available at the UCY,
perhaps combining their language with other subjects such as Business Studies.
AS/A Level GOVERNMENT & POLITICS
This course encourages you to take a lively and critical interest in all aspects of the current political
scene. You will explore and discuss ideas such as: Does the Prime Minister have too much power?
Should Parliament have more of a decision-making role? Should there be a House of Lords? Why are
people apathetic about voting? Should we be in or out of Europe? Who supports which party and why?
Should ordinary people be more involved in local government?
Specific Entry Requirements: GCSE English at Grade C. An interest in following current affairs and a
willingness to take part in political discussion are essential.
Additional Expenses: £15 for a trip to Parliament and costs of residential.
Residential: Possible trip to the USA
Progression: Most students go on to a variety of university-level courses, such as those available at
the UCY. Other students choose careers in areas including the police, local government, the armed
services and clerical work.
