AS/A Level FRENCH

This course will enable you to understand French spoken at normal speed by native speakers, read
newspapers and magazines in French and express your own ideas fairly fluently in French in both
speech and writing. The course also aims to build your knowledge and understanding of the civilisation
and culture through modules relating to France, including: Young People Today; Aspects of Society;
People and Society.

Specific Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply. You should have
Grade A* - B in GCSE French.

Additional Expenses: £10 for a dictionary, £20 for a conference.

Residential: Possibility of a three-day trip to France.

Progression: An A Level in a modern language is highly valued in today's competitive international job
market. Many students progress on to a university-level course, such as those available at the UCY,
perhaps combining their language with other subjects like Business Studies.

AS/A Level FURTHER MATHS

Do you fi nd maths fascinating? Are you likely to go to university to take a course which contains a lot
of maths? If either or both of these are true, you are highly recommended to take this course, which
is designed to be taken alongside AS and A Level Mathematics. The course includes exciting and
powerful new areas of maths like complex numbers and matrices.

Specific Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply. You should have
achieved Grade A or A* at higher level GCSE Maths.

Progression: If you are considering Maths, Physical Sciences or Engineering at university you are
strongly advised to take Further Maths to at least AS Level.

AS/A Level GEOGRAPHY

The course aims to establish links between the physical and human environment as well as looking at
the impacts on the environment. It covers a great range of topics including Physical Geography; Human
Geography; Challenge & Change in the Natural Environment; Challenge and Change in the Human
Environment. Whilst some of the topics covered will be familiar from GCSE, students need to approach
this level with an inquiring mind and an enjoyment of research and analysis.

Specific Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply. You should have
GCSEs in English Language, Maths and Double or Triple Science at Grade A* - C.

Additional Expenses: Approximately £125 for fi eld and educational trips.

Progression: Geography provides an excellent entry route to university-
level courses, either to a variety of geographical-based courses, or as a
foundation subject in either arts or sciences. It also leads to a diverse
range of careers, including: planning and surveying, working for
environment and conservation groups, resource management,
engineering, archaeology, politics, the armed forces and journalism.
