AS/A Level ENGLISH LANGUAGE

During this course you will become a language detective, searching for clues, gathering evidence,
being methodical, drawing intelligent conclusions and then presenting your case with conviction and
fl air. You will learn to look at language with new eyes and hear it with new ears - as well as growing as
a writer with opportunities to write in a variety of styles including magazine articles, children's stories,
informative leafl ets and political speeches. Throughout the course we encourage you to produce real
material, test it on the target audience and then redraft until it is successful.

Specific Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply. You should have
Grade A* - B at GCSE English, although a C may be acceptable. You should also enjoy both creative
writing and the analysis of language in use.

Progression: Many students go on to study university-level qualifi cations, such as those available
at the UCY; the course leads directly to degree courses in Linguistics and English Language and to
related degrees in Speech Therapy, Teaching, Human Communication and Media.

AS/A Level ENGLISH LITERATURE

This course gives you the opportunity to
read widely and analyse novels, poetry
and plays to see how they are written and
what meaning they have for us. You will
concentrate in detail on twelve texts over
the two years, as well as a wide range of
literature through the study of extracts.
During the course you will be given
opportunities to see fi lms of texts and
plays in performance and to take part in
workshops.

Specific Entry Requirements: Standard
entry requirements for A Levels apply.
You should have GCSE English Grade
A* - B, but in some cases a C may be
acceptable. Most importantly, you should
enjoy reading!

Additional Expenses: A possible theatre
trip £30.

Visits: There may be related visits to conferences and
other literary events.

Progression: Although obviously preparing you for a degree
in English Literature, this subject is equally valuable if you
apply for other university-level courses, such as the very
popular English and History degree at the UCY, as English is
regarded as a challenging and academic subject.
