AS Level COMMUNICATION STUDIES
The course draws from a variety of disciplines, such as Psychology and Sociology, and applies them to
the communication process, helping you to appreciate how we communicate with others and how they,
in turn, communicate with us. It also looks at how culture infl uences our ability to communicate.
The unique project and oral coursework will allow you to apply your theoretical skills to real situations
and will reduce the pressure of the fi nal exam.
Specific Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply. An interest in
communication skills and a wide range of media and a desire to develop your creativity, originality and
imagination.
Progression: Although this qualifi cation is specifi cally relevant to communication and media degrees,
it will give you access to a wide range of university courses, such as those available at the UCY. Past
students have gone into a diverse range of careers such as legal executive, naval pilot, radio studio
manager, BBC producer, marketing, offi ce and retail management.
AS/A Level COMPUTING
You will fi nish the course with an appreciation of the underlying principles of modern computer systems
and software development using a range of programming languages and software packages. You
will be able to explore how a computer works, programming using both high-level and low-level
programming language, the growing areas of computer communications and database technology.
Specific Entry Requirements: No prior knowledge is assumed, so we do not require GCSE IT or
Computing, but an interest in computer programming is necessary along with the standard entry
requirements for A Levels and GCSE Maths.
Additional Expenses: You are recommended to purchase a copy of reference books for your own use
at home.
Progression: The course provides a firm foundation
for degree level computing courses, such as the
Foundation degree in Computing and Internet
Technology at the UCY, as well as a range of other
degrees including Artifi cial Intelligence, Physics,
Medicine and Engineering. Equally, the job prospects
for A or AS students who achieve good grades are
promising.
