Opportunities for Gifted and Talented Students
Stretch & Challenge
If you have been identifi ed as a gifted and talented student while at school or College, we aim to extend
your area of expertise and excellence. You will work with your personal tutor to set targets for yourself
and lecturers will provide you with full support, as well as sufficient stretch and challenge to ensure you
are successful. The College's designated Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator will also monitor and support
your progress.
University Opportunities
Many of our students are successful in gaining places at universities across the country, including
Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group institutions.
You will be given lots of support and advice as you make your university choices and as you complete
your UCAS application. Your personal tutor and the College's HE consultant, as well as subject
specialists, will be available to help you with your application and personal statement. You will have
the opportunity to visit universities during open days, including Oxford and Cambridge, take part in
university information sessions at College during the year and the Higher Education day in the Summer
term.
You will be encouraged to visit universities, apply for Sutton Trust Summer Schools, take part in
activities organised by the South West Excellence Hub and participate in subject specifi c university
courses, such as Medlink (for potential medical students) and other university-run taster courses. You
will be given plenty of support and practice interviews if you choose to apply to Oxford or Cambridge. If
your chosen course has an aptitude test (such as the LNAT for Law), you will be given lots of guidance
and practice opportunities.
AQA Baccalaureate
As a gifted and talented student, you might want to enrol on the AQA Baccalaureate (Bacc) which
will give you the opportunity to develop your academic ability and other skills in more depth. The four
aspects of this qualifi cation would ensure academic challenge and breadth of experience:
Further details of the Bacc course offered by Yeovil College can be found on Page 16.
AS Critical Thinking
This is a subject which extends and develops analytical and lateral thinking. It is relevant to every other
curriculum area and may enhance your overall academic performance. You may be invited to study this
subject during your second year or complete it as part of the Bacc.
AS Citizenship
Please see Page 28 for details of this course.
AS and A2 Further Maths
You will be encouraged to take this subject if you are an able mathematician. This is seen as a huge
advantage in the study of Science and Maths subjects at university.
Elite Sports Programme
For elite sports performers, the College has an excellent reputation for identifying, nurturing and
developing sporting talent. The College offers specialist coaching, mentoring, individual strength and
conditioning programmes and sports science support.
Yeovil College is part of the TASS (Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme) which
provides support and services for the Elite Sports Performers.
Performing Arts
Performing Arts showcase their annual production at the Octagon
Theatre in Yeovil. Talented students from across the College help to
design and build the set, produce the costumes and help with the
administrative work involved with planning this production.
